We* should stick to the body-part theme, but this is Square-Peg Reflections - so heading off the beaten (read: "normal") track is pretty common. So, c'mon - let's see what we find off this way...
This week we've got a fantastic recording that Brené Brown, Ph.D. gave us permission to embed here - so you can just click and listen. Brené Brown is an author, professor, blogger, photographer, mama and lots more (and if you haven't seen her work yet, the best place - in my opinion - to jump in is her blog, Ordinary Courage).
This piece is a discussion recorded at Brené Brown's kitchen table with Brené and the author Katherine Center (whose latest work, Everyone is Beautiful, you've heard me rave about repeatedly!). It was part of the I Thought It Was Just Me Read-along that Brené had at her blog.
It's a long recording, but soooo worth the time! They discuss "practicing critical awareness" - a phrase from Brené's book. But don't let the fifty-dollar phrase scare you - what they really do is share their hearts about body-image, about feeling that you need to be beautiful to be loved, about how we are primed to compare ourselves and best of all - they talk about ways to move through all that - to love ourselves.
Ok, I said that the things they teach us about moving through shame and comparison is the best part. But I lied - the best part (to me) is how the recording feels like you're sitting around the kitchen table with them. It feels like you're part of the tea party - a fun visit with friends - brilliant, funny, deep-thinking friends.
The recording is full of "Aha!" moments and plenty of laughter - even though they are discussing shame. I can practically guarantee that you'll hear at least one thing that will make you say: "Aha! YES!"
This week, if you so desire, please comment on one of the "Aha!" moments you had listening to the recording of Brené Brown, Ph.D. and Katherine Center's discussion.
If you would rather talk about one body-part (after all, Body-Part Wednesday is the deal!) then go right ahead. For this week's theme I'll pick noses. Lame, huh? Actually, I typed it before I quite thought it through - but then decided to keep it because it made me laugh. Which just goes to show you that coming home from the lovely Pacific Northwest air to Bucks County's humidity has addled my brain.
Here's the recording:
*I'm not doing this alone. Many times when I say "we" I am referring to me and the SP staff (2 of my adult kiddos, Slightly-British Daughter and Manchild) - but this time I mean YOU and me - because I want my buds with me. ; )P.S. We'll continue the Body-Part giveaway (oh, I know that sounds dopey) - choosing a winner (with the on-line random number chooser) from comments to this post. Please make sure to come over to the blog to point to your comment if your comment is on your blog or on Facebook - that way we get your name in the drawing. We love having you point us to your blog or Facebook page!! The giveaway will be a copy of the MP3, Choosing Me! - our Square-Peg recording
